bedwetting enuresis

bedwetting enuresis

My child is wetting the bed at night (nocturnal enuresis)

Several worried parents have called me saying: "My child is wetting the bed at night".

Not only do i receive such calls from worried parents, but also from parents who are tired. Tired of washing sheets and duvet covers and of having to make their 5-8 aged child wear a nappy during the night.

Most parents are told by the doctor that a fairly large percentage of children wet their beds at night and that normally it will wear off.

When children wet their beds

But when children wet their beds, it may very well become a problem in daily life. For the child itself and for the family as a whole.

Apart from creating good routines around making the child have a pee before bedtime, and perhaps not drink too much during the afternoon and evening, i believe that a lot can be done. This belief is not merely based on idealistic thoughts, but on experience from my practice as a therapist.

Sometimes there is a reason for enuresis - a reason for children becoming bedwetters.

When children are bedwetters
I think that the cooperation between body and mind is out of balance. By this i mean that the signal from the body which tells you that your bladder is full does not reach the mind so that the child can react on it, wake up and go to the toilet instead of wetting the bed.
It is certainly possible....
To create communication and cooperation between body and conciousness. Even though the child is asleep, it is possible for it to receive the message to get up, just as we grown-ups do when we get up during the night to go to the toilet.
The positive means, which according to my experience is the best, is telling children stories.
Children often hear lots of good stories, they usually love fairy tales and other kinds of narratives. Their minds are very perceptive to the messages in those stories.
Thus if a child of the family wets the bed, and if this occurs far too often,
the use of stories can be a good idea. A fairy tale has been created especially for this purpose. it speaks directly to the child's subconsciousness and awakens the cooperation between body and mind which may never have been developed. the message of the story is that "water is coming".
A symbolic way to tell the child that he/she must react, when the water comes.
To help those families in which bedwetting has become a tiring nuisance i have uploaded this story on the internet. With this story being told at the child's bedside night after night during a few weeks together with a conscious talk about how nice it is to stay dry during the night, you create the missing link of which the absence meant that the child was wetting the bed before.
There are two versions of the story: a prince version and a princess version.
- The prince version is used with boys
- The princess version is used with girls

Parents can also do something!
It is understandable that after perhaps several years of bedwetting or use of nappies parents have lost their faith in the child's ability to learn to stay cleanly during the night as well as during the day. However, if the parents coach themselves to trust in their child developing this ability, it will help to make a difference. A combination of the fairy tale and constructive talks about the goal which is to stay dry and to be able to wake up and go to the toilet, and at the same time the parents coaching themselves to believe that it is possible to stop even several years of bed wetting. In many cases all these factors will make a possitive difference. The child will then also experience a night without bedwetting.

Enuresis - bedwetting is a reaction

In those situations where enuresis - bedwetting is a reaction to something which has happened in the family, for example a death, an accident or another traumatic experience, it is equally possible to help the child and if needed, the family.

Normally the treatment of a child who is wetting the bed would require 2-3 sessions. However, if bedwetting is a reaction to an unprocessed experience, the period required for treatment is very individual.

This fairy tale can in many cases limit and also put a complete stop to enuresis - bedwetting. Those of you who have downloaded it are more than welcome to send me an e-mail and tell me about the effect.
